My friend's 5 year old daughter would only eat the hot dog part inside of a corn dog. She would peel off all the outer parts and throw it away. So she got her just a hot dog and she wouldn't eat it because it tasted different.
I'm guessing you're dealing with this.
260
u/BusinessBear53 4d ago
I guess the flavour of the batter is infused into the hot dog as it steams inside. Would be a bit different from a hot dog just boiled or fried.

u/MisterGoog 4d ago
This is valid. But the raw fish of sushi tastes exactly the same

I used to peel my chicken nuggets when I was little because I didn't like the batter but wouldn't eat plain chicken so yeah, it's almost definitely the flavour of the part she "doesn't like" that she likes.

My sister can't have cheese but she likes pizza, so for her whole life she's peeled the cheese off (and another family member eats it). But one day we were like "Why don't we just get a pizza made that's only sauce??" And we got one and she didn't like it because it tasted different haha.

Well you said grocery store which likely indicates you are in America. They used a euro so they are in Europe somewhere. In the uk you would be hard pressed to find an average supermarket that had sushi that wasn’t pictured as above

I always have extra rice and nori when I make mine. So I end up with a roll or two of "depression sushi" as my friend called it. But I love me a rice wrap.
Edit: Yes I am a stoopid man it is called onigiri. Didn't know.
Edit 2: Wrong again no vinegar in onigiri. I give up. I'm too dumb for this.

It's not uncommon to find in sushi restaurants. It's generally viewed as a kid's roll since they tend to be pickier eaters.
Sushi translates as soured rice in Japanese (although vinegared rice would be more accurate) and neta is the term for the 'toppings'. So sushi without neta is just called sushi. Admittedly not that helpful when we use that term to describe a whole type of food.

u/Single-Builder-632 4d ago

292
u/Vsx 4d ago
In Japan all the food is Japanese so you can't overcharge for Japanese food.
46
u/Single-Builder-632 4d ago
lol yea i guess thats true. its hillerious how much of a price hike food gets because its foreighn even if the food is made and sorced like any other food you eat. go to a tapas resterant in the uk it will cost you £30 for the equivalent of 6 eros of tapas. how people pay that baffles me.
24
u/BusinessBear53 4d ago
Supply and demand. If there's only a few places that make it, they can charge more because there's not much competition or the companies are in on it.
Place near me sells super basic Filipino food for a big markup. Some variants of the longsilog breakfast but just changing the protein and they're quite expensive.
People still go there because there's no competition. Only option is to drive to another place really far away.

Have a friend who never messages or calls. We only do friend things when we meet in person. We've gone months without contact before meeting on random days to continue friend-ing. So this friend goes to London. He calls me in the middle of the night(my time) to cry about how much he had to pay for, in his words, piece of shit shawarma. Dude was furious. He called UK cuisine 'rubber' and warned me to never come here. He proceeded to call every other week to complain about everything UK food. I literally had to google search 'good place to eat in London' for him. He was so distraught with the experience we became closer friends.

From the receipt i can see that it was bought in Gerrmany, and the package of the sushi looks like the one from Edeka. Now some Edekas have a station where employees make them fresh by hand, which is why it's so expensive
14
u/tultommy 4d ago
Even if it's hand made by someone's Japanese grandmother using home brewed soy sauce and rice grown in her backyard... it's still not worth 9€ for 3 pieces lol.
11
u/Cleq 4d ago
It's actually from Rewe, their new sushi brand called "Eat Happy" quite expensive compared to other super market sushi but it's freshly hand made every day. I've tried it a few times now and it's actually the best super market sushi I've eaten yet.

Eat Happy has been there since 2013 tho 😅 as a former employee I'm glad that you like it. You can look up different shop locations throughout Germany, theya re literally everywhere. Human psychy. Sushi is considered still to be a "luxury" item or at the least exotic. Seeing a pack for $3.99 would make people think it's going to make them sick. Seeing $11.99 range would make people think it is high quality, safer, and tastier even though it has the same ingredients as the $3.99 one.

→ More replies (21)8
u/spicolispizza 4d ago edited 4d ago
It might have "the same ingredients" but a $4 sushi roll in my area will clearly have about 50% more rice and 50% less protein than a $12 sushi roll. And the wasabi is usually of higher quality and potency.
Same ingredients, different portions.
At least, that's my experience in my area.

But... but the seaweed has very little taste at all, by itself - hence it being an ideal means of wrapping up the sushi! Your GF is making my brainmeats hurt, bro! 🤯
[Follow-up comment: I certainly didn't have any interest or intent in starting any kind of palate-based dust up over the strength - or lack thereof - of seaweed [pardon me, not seaweed but nori, my mistake!] taste, folks. I'd assume everyone's sense of taste (and opinions thereof) vary along what's probably something of a wide spectrum. While I agree with all of you replying to this comment seeking to correct my ascertation of seaweed having a mild taste, all I have to go on is my own personal palate here. And while I can certainly agree to seaweed possessing a somewhat green, mineral-esque, and undefined combination of earthiness AND the brine of the sea... but to me, personally, it's definitely a very subtle flavor (but then yet again, I'm a smoker, so what do my compromised, deadened old taste buds know? Selah...). But absolutely NO OFFENSE was intended by my comment, nor was there any intention/design/any other ulterior motives on my behalf to create an argument over ithis... I was simply trying to make a dumb lil joke and/or offer my own perspective on OP's starting post. Thanks for all the unexpected upvotes -LOOK MA, I'M FINALLY A SUCCESSFUL REDDIT POSTER! ARE YA FINALLY PROUD OF ME NOW, MA? ...MA? ...MA?]

What?
Seaweed is the thing I love most about sushi; I hate when they use soy paper or cucumber instead. I even hate when they do the inside-out wrap because the seaweed is harder to taste.
I definitely would not say seaweed is an unnoticeable flavor in sushi.

The nori is literally the best part for me if I’m having sushi. Like the uneducated cretin that I am, I once ate sushi like I do back home whilst on holiday in Japan. That’s basically me sometimes peeling a bit of the nori to save and have last. The owner of the restaurant politely but firmly told my brothers fiancée (she’s Japanese) that I am not to ever do that again. He was smiling the whole way through too and I felt so bad for disrespecting him

If she doesn't like the rice and nori, then maybe she should get sashimi instead. If she just doesn't like the nori, there's nigiri sushi which might be more suitable to her tastes. Then again, from the coloring on the rice it looks like these might be some sort of avocado roll or something so maybe that's not available in another form where she's buying from? IDK... it's her money and if she's happy then I guess that's all that matters.
