My dad immigrated from Poland in the 50's. He overheard some racists calling Canada Geese "illegals" and just can't stop laughing everytime he sees one now.

u/SaltLakeCitySlicker 6d ago

Wait til they find out they're Canada geese, not Canadian. They're not even all necessarily from Canada??? I've heard everything now!

68

Well, people from Paris Texas aren't French, id assume that could be worked into a witty response somehow if I weren't so fucking high

4

Let's not forget the non-Egyptians in Cairo, Nebraska.

2

Iā€™m a little stoned and it made me imagine Yosemite Sam trying to get to Paris Texas but ends up in France and just starts blasting over French toast actually being better than Texas toast

2

Either are the residents of Paris, Ontario, Canada.

Dude, theyā€™re gonna be pissssssed when they find out they donā€™t get free health insurance.

I am a Canadian Goose and I do not know of any Haitian eating my brothers or sisters in either Ohio or any other district of the United States. Most of my brethren are still in Canada and we are on notice to avoid traveling in Ohio airspace for the time being.

Canada Geese. Theyā€™re named after the man who discovered them (John Canada), not the country. Fun fact, for trivia or something in the future.

u/ratbear 6d ago

John Canada sounds like the name that Trump would make up on the spot for Justin Trudeau after forgetting his name.

3

u/JayTwitchy 6d ago

This comment gave me flashbacks. I used to be a landscaper and did waterfront properties. We would have to blow the lawn off to clear all the goose poop before we could mow and trim, otherwise it was a horrible splatter fest....

42

u/manyhippofarts 6d ago

Yeah but John Canada was named after Canada. Ipso-facto, Canadian geese are named after Canada.

4

u/repeatwad 5d ago

In the year 1534 there were 3 explorers who discovered a great piece of land. They had no idea what to name it. So they each decided to pick a letter and go from there. The first explorer said "C" eh, the second said "N" eh, and the last said "D" eh. That's how the great Canada was named

2

u/manyhippofarts 5d ago

That's a total lie and I'd appreciate it if you quit spreading lies, propaganda, and hyperbole, if you don't mind.

It was the year 1535. Get your shit squared.

7

u/IrrationalDesign 6d ago

Yes, but their naming conventions follow the grammar of being named after a person, not the grammar of being named after a country (or being named for stemming from a country). Therefore: Canada Goose, not Canadian Goose.

4

u/manyhippofarts 6d ago

But is a Canada goose from Canada actually Canadian?

20

u/IrrationalDesign 6d ago

Canadian Canada Geese are Canadian, yeah. There are American Canada Geese as well, which means a Canadian Canada Goose can move to the US and get babies that are Canadian-American Canada Geese.

2

u/I_Makes_tuff 6d ago

But are there Canadian America Geese as well, which means an American America Goose can move to Canada and get babies that are American-Canadian America Geese?

2

u/IrrationalDesign 5d ago

What are these 'America Geese'? A new brand of geese that were discovered by someone who's name is 'America'?

u/MockStarket 6d ago

26

u/azalago 6d ago

This actually isn't true but I've seen it before. They were first described by Carl Linnaeus, in his 18th century Systema Naturae (aka where we get binomial nomenclature from.) He gave them the scientific name Branta canadensis, meaning a goose that is black (burnt) and from Canada.

16

u/james_sloth 6d ago

I hate to be that person but as someone who formally believed this myth, it isnā€™t trueā€¦

11

u/Daovin 6d ago

Aw man, people are gonna believe you.

2

u/johnnybmagic 6d ago

I sure hope that no one is dumb enough to believe that.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/tanstaafl90 6d ago

The first recorded use of the name, 'Canada goose' appeared in 1772 in Carl Linnaeus' Systema Naturae. The "John Canada" story is a myth.

3

u/CapitalistLion-Tamer 6d ago

No theyā€™re not. Thatā€™s a myth. Thereā€™s no evidence of any ornithologist named John Canada ever existing. Itā€™s called a Canada goose because thatā€™s what its Latin name means (roughly ā€œBlack Goose from Canada)

https://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2015/04/canada-goose.html

7

u/BreakerSoultaker 6d ago

Thatā€™s not true. They are named after the country and can be called Canada Goose or Canadian Goose.

3

u/pistoffcynic 6d ago

Thatā€™s Johnny Canuck to us Canadians.

2

u/Prof_Acorn 6d ago

2

u/mikesum32 6d ago

2

u/AaronTuplin 6d ago

Canadian geese are protected by federal and state laws:

Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA): This federal law protects Canada geese, their eggs, and nests.

State laws: Some states, like Florida, have adopted the MBTA to protect Canada geese. For example, in Ohio, Canada geese are protected by both the MBTA and state law.

I live in Ohio and the geese are everywhere there's water nearby through the summer. They're about to leave in the next few weeks. They slowly cross busy streets because fuck you. We get 1-2 nests on my company's roof. It's a patio that has a 5ft raised flower bed that they nest in. But during the summer we like to go to the roof to get high have lunch. So youll be sitting there while a federally and state protected birb stares you down, judging you like a winged cat, while you hit the pen eat lunch. We had to fire a maintenance worker for destroying a nest.

You can move nests before eggs are laid. Put up barriers. And some other pre-egg shit. But after those eggs are down, there's not much you can do expect syare back at these Canuck mfers

This is very true, once these migratory bird populations were dwindling. So in 1918 that treaty was enacted. Since then those geese have flourished to currently 7 million and are now considered by many to be a nuisance. Bout time we start grabbing the free food that is out there for the taking.

Oh man. My old buddy Raimo - he was just joking around, not a vicious bone in his body; we're walking around a lake and he picks up a rock and - not even trying to - tossed it right at a goose sitting there, killing it instantly with a head shot.

We all fall around him "whoa dude wtf!" blah blah, sorta happy (I guess?) for him or whatever.

He's stricken. Won't move. Things get real quiet. BOOM! Raimo dives into the lake, fully clothed, swims out to the dead bird and swims back with it. We're elated again; "yeah, good on you man, awesome!", thinking I don't know what.

"We need to eat it." he said.

Understand that we weren't a bunch of hoodlums trying to kill local wildlife, we were a bunch of hoodlums trying to drink beer and find the next place to chill and not eat huge dead birds. Especially dead birds from a lake with known toxins.

Anyway, we went back to our squat and Raimo ate that dead bird, bless him. I declined.

I am more upset at people using just ā€œgeeseā€ as a pronoun for them itā€™s a gaggle of geese if they are on the ground or a skein if they are flying in formation, letā€™s try this in a sentence. President trump said that many Haitian immigrants have been sautĆ©ing local gaggles of geese with drawn butter and a side of crĆØme fraiche .

they have a shoot here every year at a park, to thin them out.

1

u/Beardicus223 6d ago

Funny thing is, youā€™re technically correct. This literally happened in Allen, Texas in April of this year.

A teenage girl somehow grabbed two geese at a local park and shoved them in her car to take home. A few people recorded it on their phones and went viral on social media. Local police got involved and basically had to tell the community ā€œyeah itā€™s weird, but they arenā€™t a protected species so itā€™s technically not illegal.ā€

Her name got out and the cops convinced her to voluntarily give the geese back so people would leave her alone.

Several news outlets covered it. Wild stuff.

1

u/CentiPetra 6d ago

Actually in the US it's illegal to capture, kill, or interfere with any migrating bird.
