Taylor Swift's Endorsement of Kamala Harris Has Resulted in a "400% to 500% Increase" in Voter Registration article

Note: The headline is (obviously) misleading. The "400-500% increase" observed was/is not an overall increase, but an increase in daily registrations on "vote.gov" specifically, likely over the course of 24 hours.

As reported by Elizabeth Wagmeister (CNN news correspondent) and Betsy Klein (CNN Sr. White House Producer), 405,999 people were referred to Vote.gov directly from Swift’s Instagram page. Such a number dwarfs the website’s usual traffic, which averages about 30,000 visitors per day.

Swift Voted is a play on attack ads against John Kerry. A group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, put out ads that were lies claiming that John Kerry's combat awards were fake. This became known as "swiftboating."

9

u/Iron-Octopus 4d ago

And this allowed a draft dodger to prevail over an actual combat veteran.

The GOP is making a huge AI-assisted push to purge voters. Make very sure you and yours are registered!

There are houses of conservatives where the liberal voter in the house was the only one purged. It is a targeted push.

Idk if it’s impressive or sad that this many people are only registering to vote because a billionaire celebrity told them they should.

224

u/racer_24_4evr 5d ago

I mean, I bet a significant number are 18-22 year old women who were not of voting age last election and haven’t been politically motivated until now.

148

u/Narfwak 4d ago

This is the key thing people always forget about young voters - it's new people every election, because that's how time works.

38

u/Worthyness 4d ago

The demographic still doesn't vote nearly as dedicated as old people unfortunately. younger people could be a massive voting block that can turn states if they only voted as consistently as old people did. Some of these elections are won or lost by literal thousands of people. 1 vote absolutely does matter, especially if you're doing down ballot stuff too.

Many of them are likely at voting age for the first time. Considering they’re in the midst of their college years (or the early stages of their careers), they’re inundated on all sides with different things drawing their attention and on which they can spend their time.

Teenagers and young adults don’t always prioritize well, I’m not gonna take it as a bad thing that a prominent entertainment figure in their life is encouraging them to get engaged in their futures and that of their peers.

110

u/TheGreatBootOfEb 5d ago

Yep, and many studies show if you vote once, you are exceedingly more likely to stay a lifelong voter. Starting young women as voters before they’ve got husbands filling their heads who to vote for is vital. I’ve met far too many women in their 40s-50s whose only voting knowledge is what they’re told to vote or think of by their husbands.

If Taylor Swift telling them to go and vote is what it takes so women don’t fall down that hole, I’m all for it even if I don’t personally like her music.

7

u/fiduciary420 4d ago

This happened to my sister, her husband surrendered to right wing hate ideology and dragged her into it with him.

I would routinely embarrass him in political discussions and make him rage quit and say stupid shit, and she wouldn’t budge. Now that he’s in jail, and they’re divorcing, she’s coming back to reality.

It's a pathway in and usually young adults need that because politics at that age are very boring to most people in their 20's into 30's. It's happened in most generations this way. Remember Rock the Vote MTV started airing in the 90's to essentially plead with young people the importance of voting?

4

u/reanima 4d ago

Young adults sometimes feel like they just "dont know enough" about life or politics to think theyre going to make an intelligent vote so they end up not doing so. Gotta tell them its ok not knowing everything. Its 100% ok to leave stuff blank if youre unsure, just vote for the stuff that has an impact to you.

I can't help but wonder how much is because of her endorsement and how much is because of the debate.

yeah, I've seen that mentioned but even if it's halved, that's still incredible.

21

u/Squatchshrooms 4d ago

I would love to see an America where 80-90% of the citizens make it to the polls. 2020 was the highest turnout ever and even then it was only 67% iirc.

11

u/IAmDeadYetILive 4d ago

I'm hoping for 80% and I think it might happen. 90% I don't even think I can compute that lol.

Unfortunately one of the downsides of living in a free society means people are free to be apathetic, civically illiterate, and lazy. Maybe the JLVRA should have an amendment added making it illegal not to vote.

33

u/LitzLizzieee 4d ago edited 4d ago

Here in Australia we have mandatory voting, and we routinely hit 90%+! and thats in a country with vast outback country with incredibly remote people. (Australia is the size of the USA but only has 25 million people... I cannot understate the vastness of our land) Our last election in 2022 was the first since 1922 to be lower than 90%.. and it still did 89.22%.

Because its a legal obligation, we have an independent electoral commission which makes voting as accessible and easy as they can, from running polling on Saturday, to offering prepoll and postal votes, to even running remote teams that drive 100s of kms to remote outback stations to allow the 30 people that live there to vote. They even run a polling station in Antarctica for the scientists stationed out there. I've volunteered for the AEC before and it's genuinely amazing to see the work folks do every election.

America really needs to implement the same system, that way everyone has their vote counted, and politics becomes less divisive because politicians need to win a majority of their constituents, not just those whom vote.

20

u/PoetryUpInThisBitch 4d ago

America really needs to implement the same system, that way everyone has their vote counted, and politics becomes less divisive because politicians need to win a majority of their constituents, not just those whom vote.

Sadly, that's exactly why it won't happen, because the right wing relies on gerrymandering, voter suppression, and general fuckery to maintain their hold on power since the more people that vote, the more power they lose.

-All 50 states need to mandate paid time off for voting

-transport needs to be provided

-it needs to be accessible to people with disabilities, a huge block of the non-voting population because they can't access voting.

it's not all apathy, it's purposeful disenfranchisment.

23

u/marcuschookt 5d ago

The principle of it is quite concerning because you think, if things were just a little different she could just as easily have drummed up arbitrary support for the other side. It also means that there is a significant number of voters on both sides of the aisle who completely miss the point of politics and that the modern US is built on basically complete randomness.

30

u/mindless_gibberish 4d ago

I don’t think many people are changing their political views for Taylor. I think it’s more likely that she reminded people to check their registration status and encouraged first time voters to register.

Which isn’t nothing. A lot of young people don’t fully understand the process and think their vote doesn’t matter. So encouragement from their favorite artist packaged with an easily accessible link can motivate them to actually do it.

4

u/whogivesashirtdotca 4d ago

Some people need the reminder. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of those registrations were from people who idly checked the voting rolls and discovered they'd been purged.

Listened to the actual interview. No, there was not a 400% - 500% increase in registrations. There was that much increase in interest i.e. going to the website. We don't actually know how many of those people actually registered.

832

u/TheMooseIsBlue 5d ago

The article says traffic is normally 30k a day. They got 400k+ with 24 hours directly linked from her IG post. That’s the interest number.

Some data company then said registrations were up 400%-500%.

139

u/ClassicPlankton 5d ago

She posted a link, people clicked it, then probably left after a few seconds.

440

u/TheMooseIsBlue 5d ago

Since this is legitimate interest, we can expect a much higher conversion (people actually registering). I don't know what the average / expected conversion rate is, I just know it for spam emails but it's surprising how often that gives a decent idea

No-one that says that has ever meant it.

19

u/BlueRaith Spotify 4d ago

I do, actually. I live in a small, very red county in Texas. No young person's vote is actually going to matter here in terms of our local or state representatives.

That said, our town's population has been in significant decline since right before 9/11, according to a census graph from Google. Which means these kids are doing the smart thing and getting the hell out of here.

Away from their parents, away from this rural bubble, and off to college or anywhere else where they will meet new people and live through new experiences.

They may just vote in step with their parents for their first election. I know I did. But what is far, far more critical is getting them to vote for the first time. You are exceedingly more likely to become a lifelong voter after voting just one time.

I'll gladly take the gamble of encouraging young people to vote as an investment towards the future. Texas suppresses voter registration for a reason. When more people vote, those new voters vote Democrat far more than they do Republican.

When I worked at the local grocery store as an assistant manager, I made sure to ask and allow everyone in my department an opportunity to clock out and go vote on election day. I told them I wasn't going to tell them how to vote, just that they do.

My best year was 16 young baggers and cashiers. I genuinely hope most of them have continued voting, no matter how they voted that first year.

6

u/dora_tarantula 4d ago

Polls indicate that the majority of people who saw the debate thought kamala won, so probably most people who saw it and decided to register want to vote for the person they think won. And the part of the increase which happened because tswift endorsed kamala probably supports kamala as well. Like, shouldn't we support everyone who has any opinion on either voting because overwhelmingly they're leaning democrat?

Because they only have one value: social dominance. It explains literally everything.

It’s funny because she’s had comments disabled on her posts for years and years now.

Ironic because you get kicked off of their safe space over there for posting anything suggesting their little diaper boy isn't a god.

they were laughing at Taylor for disabling comments on her page, restricting free speech against her

No doubt they just wanted to thank her for encouraging young people to go out and vote, right? Or maybe they had some polite, thoughtful and well-informed opinions on why Harris perhaps isn’t the best choice.

I simply can’t imagine anyone from that sub being a hateful bigot 🤥

11

u/Many-Birthday12345 4d ago

Fun fact, she’s apparently the reason instagram changed their comments settings. 2016 was when people kept commenting snake emojis and other awful things to the point she ended up going into hiding.

I’m unsure who to vote for because my favorite celebrity hasn’t made an endorsement yet… please somebody get Ja Rule on the phone!!

38

u/ReallyDumbRedditor 5d ago

it's not even that they were unsure, just indifferent lol

47

u/Theboringlife 4d ago

This is the big point I keep making. There aren't any undecided voters in America, only unmotivated potential voters. I'm not gonna lie, when Biden was running a few weeks ago, I was very unmotivated. I still would've voted, but I can imagine alot of others not turning out of they're unmotivated.

I think also for young people, politics is just not on their radar. They're out living life, but if your favorite musician puts it front and center, I imagine that can help with motivation.

Taylor Swift fans are young and are going to vote Democrat, generally. Her endorsement is merely a reminder to vote, which younger people generally don't do.

“Who’s afraid of little old me? Well you should be”.

18

u/myrianthi 4d ago

If you head on over to the flavored users only subreddit, they're all saying "WHO CARES" regarding Swifts endorsement. Uh - They should care! Shes influencing millions of votes!

9

u/Soulful-Sorrow 4d ago

They lack any and all self-awareness. I went to take a look after the debate and I saw people saying "Yeah, I can't believe millions of rubes are so brainless that they blindly follow whatever their favorite celebrity says. Sad. Celebrities should have no voice in politics."

And it's like, dude, who's your candidate again? It's like someone putting on a pair of sunglasses so you can't see them crying.

3

u/Expensive-Ad-5032 4d ago

People definitely should care about this entire election, because it’s too important. But we also don’t need to overestimate or exaggerate how many will actually go to vote, especially for who. It’s not set in stone, so no need to jinx it.

If she is the reason why Kamala wins Pennsylvania then it’s all worth it. We are desperate to keep the orange clown from going back to the White House.

Trumps love of Russia surely didn't charm any of Pennsylvania's Polish population, also.

People are either too young or forgot about the whole Rock The Vote marketing on MTV back in the day. Every election since the early to mid 90's (or essentially when I started noticing it) has had some sort of entertainment/entertainer telling young people to register and vote. It's the age group that is always lacking in participation for local, state and federal elections.

21

u/Icy-Mongoose-3670 4d ago

I just registered today!! But not because of a post. I'm 36 and am finally inspired to vote for someone I believe in!

This actually works on the micro level too where influential people in your small circle can get people to do things. This is one of the basics of behavior change. We are herd animals. Instead of whining about it, we should maximize for good.

13

u/se7en41 5d ago

What a great parallel for everyday life.

None of my neighbors care about soccer, but whenever we crack a couple beers and have family time, all I gotta do is start dribbling and juggling a ball for a few minutes, and sooner or later all the grown ups are passing a ball around and playing with the kids.

If it's perfectly acceptable for me to influence my neighbors and I into some drunken cardio, why isn't it acceptable for someone actually famous to coax people into something they might not try otherwise?

Jesus. Imagine if people registered to vote just because they gave a shit about like.... iunno, not living in a christofascist ethnostate? Or like because they didn't want to see their human rights repealed to the 18th century?

Sigh

Don't get me wrong, im happy for the boost, I guess.

Welcome aboard, Swifties.

22

u/imjustbettr 5d ago

You gotta start somewhere. I'm sure for a lot of them this might be their first.

40

u/WeepingAgnello 5d ago

It's not a bad thing, encouraging people to vote. Encouragement is more emotional than logical... Hopefully these new voters will take interest in meaningful political topics

7

u/swift-aasimar-rogue 4d ago

It’s also possible that some people hadn’t registered yet. A solid chunk of her fanbase is young and may not have voted before.

7

u/bateKush 4d ago

how is this different from a psa?

3

u/raishak 4d ago

A loud minority act like the country is a disaster, but I'd say most American's day to day life is pretty good, especially those with educated parents that probably lean left. Voting is about action, and people with few problems prefer non-action. A problem you might end up having is not easy to internalize as real for most people.

Are we certain that it wasn’t the very public high profile debate that happened at about the same time?

102

u/windwildwind 5d ago

This is specifically about the number of people who visited the registration website via the unique link she posted

→ More replies (10)

5

u/CitizenHalo 4d ago

Yeah, they’re certain. They’d be able to track user traffic from Instagram from the time she posted, or via her link (if it was a unique link, but I’m unsure if it was). The article was also updated to confirm:

“According to data firm TargetSmart, Swift’s endorsement has led to a “400% or 500% increase” in voter registration — between 9,000-10,000 people per hour.”

Considering that they usually get 30,000 visits A DAY, that’s insane traffic.

On a side note, in my younger days I used to wonder why A Listers avoided officially endorsing a President, little did I know back. While Taylor has just shown how powerful her influence is, it’ll be interesting to see how impactful it actually is (for me personally, I hope it boosts Kamala Harris’ chances over Don Chump.

A testament to how stupid and ignorant Americans actually are cos it takes a pop star’s endorsement to get them to vote.

The topic headline misses one of the most important aspects of these registrations: According to data firm TargetSmart which tracks the registration check API requests, about 80% of voters who register this late in the election cycle end up voting.

3

u/Vio94 4d ago

I guess it makes sense. A lot more people are old enough to vote now that were too young the last time she rallied voter registration.
