Steve Adams on basketball being played at resort during COVID: "This is not Syria mate. It's not that hard..We're living in a bloody resort"

Steven Adams is low-key one of the funniest NBA players. I still remember him talking about ducking Kevin Garnett's trash talk by saying "No English bro" lmao

u/AtomicBlastCandy 5d ago

Love the clip of a kid demanding an autograph. He looks at him and says “What do you say?” And kid immediately says “please” and afterwards “thank u”

261

u/Emu1981 4d ago

I do that to my kids if they forget.

107

u/Flutters1013 4d ago

It's great until the kids sound like Oliver twist in the grocery store asking for some Dino nuggets.

That's when you hit them with the Rolling Stones classic "You can't always get what you want."

He’s also the strongest mfer the league has known. His strength is legend.

Wait till you learn his sister is/was one of the strongest women in the world.

That whole family is built different.

She used to shop at the supermarket I worked at and she was massive, she took up most of the aisle when she walked down. Very nice lady.

I also used to go to the same gym as her boyfriend and he would bench ridiculous numbers

16

u/kelper2212 4d ago

Being on Islands is why they're like that. People who couldn't pack on mass easily starved before reproductive age, due to frequent famines. That's also partly why countries like Samoa now have the highest obesity rates, their systems are not designed for modern diets

I respected and still respect the fuck out of Steven Adams for this. I remember players describing life inside the bubble like it was hell and that clearly shows the level at which so many NBA players are pampered these days, on and off the court.

67

u/YobaiYamete 4d ago

My uncle is a pilot, and one day was complaining because his clients would hire him to fly them to resorts and on hunting trips etc, and would pay for him to go too so he had to lay on the beach for a week or go stay for a week in a cabin and go elk hunting etc

Like dude, I'm pretty sure at least 85% of people working in factories or at dead end jobs would jump at the chance to have to lay on the beach next to the tiki bar for a week

29

u/tractiontiresadvised 4d ago

I mean, he's not wrong in that while he hanging out with them, his time isn't really his own. It's definitely a "first world problems" sort of situation and I agree that many people would jump at the chance to do it, but if all you want to do is fly a plane then I can see how it would bug him.

9

u/Accurate_Trifle_4004 4d ago

What's interesting is how quick they got used luxury.

Quite a few NBA players grew up in poverty.

179

u/DrYoda 4d ago

Most NBA players these days grow up relatively well-off. You got to have money to afford the training and opportunities it takes

51

u/entropy_bucket 4d ago

Interesting video on the proliferation of new nba stars being kids of former players.

43

u/Massive_Parsley_5000 4d ago

Eh, I mean in a game like basketball it's not that surprising.

Basketball skills can be taught. Height can't. Having a 7' tall dad means you already have a leg up on 99.9% of the population in terms of all the genetic dice rolls you'll need to be an NBA player.

26

u/Kilane 4d ago edited 4d ago

And you have an expert who started training you at 2 years old. You’ve a role model who can teach you discipline, a healthy lifestyle and who reflects that the NBA is a realistic goal.

9

u/MotoMkali 4d ago

Not just height, athleticism too. Even the bad athletes by nba standards are like top 1% athletes. A guy like Duncan Robinson who is incredibly unathletic relative to the league. He's 6'8 220 and moves like he's 6' 180.

And that's about as unathletic as you can get without being 6'11.

Plus as the other guys said skill trainers from when you are 5 makes a big difference.

Its pretty insane how many people expect "pro stars" to come from "the slums" like many stars.

Theres some pretty insane athletes coming from slums because they have the determination to grab every opportunity they have but more and more sports is seen as something that can be a good start to a carreer for richer folks as well. These slum stars now have to go up against kids their age that get pro athlete training while theyre 12.

At a catering party i worked at for some rich AF folks the son was 20min late because he almost forgot he had a physiotherapy appointment. The therapist came to their home where they have a dedicated recoveryroom for this 13 year old that plays soccer. Granted he must be doing something great but overheard his uncle say he managed to get an interview with some coach of a youth team and that was how he got signed to them.

Thats a 13yo that undeniably will have some good talent and skills but also has the support of a strong network/connections, physiotherapy some pro athletes dont even get access to and who knows what else. Good luck bouncing up against people like that.

Sure these parents were millionaires but they werent 'grand villa with servants' rich, just wealthy family with good connections which means you get richer and richer if you dont do dumb shit.

Women are the primary victims of war, don't you forget about that too.

It is better to die slowly in a trench as rats eat your legs than to survive having a husband weak enough to die in a war.

287

u/SentientReality 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah, that is one of the most offensive and stupid things often repeated that, like so many things, would never be tolerated with genders swapped.

Edit: imagine if Hillary Clinton's stupid quote was flipped around:

Men have always been the primary victims of rape. Men must witness the trauma of their wives, their mothers, their daughters after being raped.

Imagine how society would have reacted to that statement. But, somehow saying women being the primary victims of male deaths didn't outrage people. Wild.

→ More replies (102)

u/Bella_Anima 4d ago

I mean perhaps not the torturous dying in a trench part but in war women are always victims of rape and torture and murder at the hands of soldiers, both their own and the enemies.

DER MURDURED MUR DERDER

43

u/Toby_O_Notoby 4d ago

Kate Winslet was on The Watch podcast and says it's her favourite skit of all time. She has it saved on her phone and her and her family constantly quote lines like "Did I sturder?"

(And on a side note, she comes across as a lovely person. She was interviewed by Chris and Andy from The Watch to promote Mare and thought they were funny so she subscribed. When the finale aired she called them up and said, "Can I come back on the pod to talk about it?" and they were both floored.)

When Kate met Leo DiCaprio for the first time she flashed him to break the ice (since the very first scene they filmed together for "Titanic" was the nude scene - Cameron shot it this way because both Leo and Kate didn't know each other very well and he wanted to capture the on-screen uneasiness between the two)

It's interesting because she was always pretty of course but there was a certain age where I rewatched Titanic and realised that she's actually incredibly beautiful.

I guess we focus on different things over time.

21

u/MyLastAcctWasBetter 5d ago edited 4d ago

I saw Titanic for the first time when I was in kindergarten… I was at some neighborhood house party and my older brothers were watching it, so it seemed like the cool thing to do. My parents were either too busy socializing or just didn’t really care if I saw it. Either way, the movie both amazed and traumatized me. And it made me think that Kate Winslet was the most beautiful and glamorous person alive. Like, I could not conceive of a person who was more beautiful than her.

That said, my parents were less than thrilled when they got a call from the school that I had tried getting other kids to play-out the scene with me during recess… in my defense, I’m pretty sure that I told people we could just pretend to be naked.

I love this. It shouldn't take bravery to just be a regular, normal human. I've always liked her. Takes like this make me like her more. She's a great actor who also seems to understand that it's just acting.

Edit: I'm thinking people are missing my point because they didn't read the article? This is not a comment on all the meanings and contexts of bravery. It's a simple appreciation of an actor refusing to bow down to the silliness of Hollywood standards (from Hollywood itself and us as society).

251

u/gereffi 5d ago

If it was just acting, sure. The problem is that being even a minor celebrity comes with a lot of baggage. Seeing hundreds of negative comments online and in the media about your appearance or body could take a toll on your mental health. It’s probably not as bad when you look like Kate Winslet.

317

u/toylenny 5d ago

Kate's been through the wringer for her looks. She got so much hate for not being cocaine skinny in her youth.

146

u/panlakes 5d ago

“I wasn’t even fucking fat” lmao. She has some good quotable stuff. Imagine that a real human being in Hollywood

137

u/katfromjersey 5d ago

That hateful bee-yotch Joan Rivers tore Kate apart on her E fashion critique show, during Kate's Titanic Oscar season red carpets. She looked absolutely stunning during every interview and event, and had a slim-ish, regular sized body. Rivers did nothing but comment on her weight.

23

u/delorf 4d ago

I both admire Joan Rivers for the strides she made as a female comic in a male dominated and often misogynistic industry and absolutely hate her for her misogynistic fat shaming of women like Elizabeth Taylor and Kate Winslet. Kate was never even fat.

25

u/GreasyPeter 5d ago

Why did everyone like Joan Rivers again?

61

u/Pppppppp1 5d ago

Idk if that’s a genuine question, but she is literally famous for being a pioneer for women in comedy, especially regarding abrasive and insulting shit. Definitely a hugely influential person in breaking the mold for women in entertainment, but if you think her making fun of Kate winslet’s weight is bad, you’ll probably really hate her other shit.

Here’s a New Yorker bit on her that goes over it in depth:

I was thinking that she's probably no different from other actresses regarding facing pressure from others behind the scenes in the industry over things related to her appearance in relation to her career, like expectations of undergoing plastic surgery. I'm not surprised that she got criticism over her looks since there were a lot of female celebrities in the 90s getting pushed for having skinnier looks over thicker bodies

Kate Winslet had her own share of criticism for Titanic. Too many disgusting critics and public people were making fun of her and calling her "fat". She's been through that ordeal before.

I still think it's good she's trying to normalize this kind of attitude. Maybe that baggage of celebrity would decrease if they all started taking this stance.

u/GreasyPeter 5d ago

I feel like British actors have a lot less pressure than American actors because there's less expectations on people in British film to look a certain way. I'm American and our obsession with having everyone in our media be excessively attractive gets tiring really fast.

True, especially since your looks is your main ticket to jobs and cash. It’s like somebody at work undermining your certificates, qualifications, academic work, and experience.

17

u/bb_LemonSquid 5d ago

Kate Winslet got so much shit back in the day for being “fat” so even if you look like Kate Winslet you’re not immune.

14

u/justanawkwardguy Eureka 5d ago

There needs to be some sort of class for celebrities to take to learn how to ignore that shit. Like if they understand it’s all for show/attention/money, then maybe it’ll be easier to brush off

Granted, money can buy you therapy

It kinda seems like the second worst part of being a celebrity is having to do constant interviews dealing with the same bullshit questions and having to act excited about whatever nonsense you're currently in. Seems like most of those could just be done away with entirely, but then who would keep the lights on over at Variety and TheWrap and the Hollywood Reporter?

34

u/InnocentTailor 5d ago

If nothing else, having less bullshit questions is why Hot Ones is seen as a fun, engaging production. The host Evans does his research to give the celebrity thought-provoking, interesting queries.

I can't get the image of Kate talking dirty dressed as a nun out of my head. And I don't ever want to.

I honestly don't know how any of them kept it together, especially with Kate in full nun regalia while she said that. In fact, I think it took a ridiculous number of takes (see if you can find the outtakes/blooper reel for Extras and you'll see for yourself). 😅

The clip is from the show Extras if anyone is curious.

Finally some common sense out of Hollywood. Rare thing.

59

u/thefrankyg 5d ago

Wish some folks would tell it to the actors who play Operators or military in a movie, and all of a sudden thinking they are Billy bad ass cause they hang with operators and such.

14

u/timk85 5d ago

Do you have an example?

64

u/cahir11 5d ago

Mark Wahlberg once said that if he was on one of the 9/11 flights, it "wouldn't have gone down that way" and he would have landed the plane safely. Tbf he did later apologize for saying that, so even eventually understood that was an idiotic thing to say. But the impulse that made him say it in the first place almost certainly came from him playing badasses in movies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Lewin

American-Israeli Computer Scientist and former Israeli special forces Captain was one of the first victims. It's theorized he tried to stop the hijackers and was stabbed by another hijacker. In real life even someone with training isn't likely to overwhelm a larger group without weapons.

8

u/IndependentlyBrewed 4d ago

I think it was mentioned by the stewardess when calling the emergency line to let them know what was happening that he had gotten up to stop one of them but another hijacker was sitting behind him, stabbed him, then another slit his throat.

Plus United 93 did retaliate against the hijackers to get to the cockpit. Struggles could be heard over the radio and the belief is the passengers were probably succeeding hence the hijackers taking the plane down realizing they weren’t going to get to the destination. So the idea that he’d take it over and then land the plane is insanity. They’d just drop the plane down to at least kill the people on board.

Marky Mark was famously involved in multiple racist assaults as a juvenile where he knocked people out and broke bones.

I don't think he's the archetype of a theater dork who started believing he was a badass because he got cast in an action movie. He was a wannabe tough guy many years before anyone cast him in a movie.

23

u/PreacherSquat 4d ago

here's a nice quote when asked about a middle age vietnamese man he beat up

And though the right thing to do would be to try to find the man and make amends, Wahlberg says, he admits he hasn't done so -- but says he's no longer burdened by guilt.

It's not THE Ukraine.

30

u/Klutzy-Ranger-8990 4d ago

I don’t think Kate Winslet is propagating Russian apologia, it’s just off the cuff and how Ukraine was referred to in the past

26

u/Armleuchterchen 4d ago

Did English used to have this form?

The German form is still "Die Ukraine" (which looks very unfortunate in an English context).

47

u/Nick_pj 4d ago

In this particular case, the difference is politically charged. Because the name itself means “border” or “edge”, Russia likes to use the equivalent of “The Ukraine” because it implies that the land exists at the edge of Russia. It undermines the country’s independence.

21

u/JediBlight 4d ago

This! Never underestimate the power of language. Just look at Kyiv, bet you know it as 'Kiev', it's all about imperialism, justifification for the horror that were witnessing today.

I'm not aware of the history/geopolitics but as a Brit, I always heard it referred to as "The Ukraine" growing up. It's only since the conflict that I started hearing people drop the article.

5

u/Mysticpoisen 4d ago

It's not been since this conflict, it's been since the fall of the USSR. They've requested to drop the preceding The since 1991.

Kate is fucking badass human! Remember the time she saved Virgin guy’s mother from fire?

u/Rosebunse 5d ago

I think bravery is all about context and circumstance. Within the context of your obsessed Hollywood, sure, it's brave. But yeah, but to remember the context and to not act like you're risking your actual life.

hot take (from a guy with no makeup experience, but maybe an outside perspective):

makeup: it promotes confidence, but not as much as it undermines it. being without makeup becomes a challenge and promotes an unhealthy separation of the public/false vs private/true self. inevitable natural aging triggers more makeup use, or more desperate procedures like "light" cosmetic surgery. i think everyone should be able to do whatever they want to do and give "fashion" a wide berth, but i worry there's trillions being spent and being made to make people feel incomplete and unconfident without buying something.

bravery: it's all relative. you wouldn't tell someone they're not brave for standing up to their boss or standing up in front of a crowd just because there's more brave things. everyone's mental health is relative to themselves, the truth that "there's others worse off" doesn't help someone suicidal. it's good to call out that there's more important things, but an aging (albeit beautiful) actress showing her true self as much as possible is uniquely positioned to contribute to the conversation of makeup use. IMO it's difficult for her, positive for others, and brave.

u/ArabianAftershock 5d ago

Am I wrong for thinking that it is kinda brave to show yourself nude to a huge audience for a movie?

Like yeah I get it you're not going to war but I don't understand the comparison in the first place, possibly dying is not the only scenario in which bravery occurs lol

55

u/LeagueOfLegendsAcc 5d ago

Some people don't take nudity nearly as seriously as others. It's not really surprising to see this take, especially from someone familiar with the work.
