I don't think that they were able to reach them. It sounds like the local boys became violent in reaction to their presence and threatened them. The problem with being an outreach group means that you are unarmed and must put yourself in danger.

A lot of charity work comes with appearances, if you arm your group then people will be less likely to approach you for help. A lot of Charity workers go unarmed into dangerous places because of this and end up dead. Some groups will hire locals to protect them, the locals will usually hang around the group but not be visibly apart of them so people feel safe to approach.

I am so sad to know this and also makes hearing about this organization and Anja so much more impactful. From the safety of my home I cannot relate to her absolute bravery to be able to do this kind of dangerous work.

Wonder why the boys were so heated about the possibility of the workers talking to the ‘witches’

Because they knew that the workers would offer the witch food and if the witch continues to live they will receive bad luck. Basically they wanted to starve the children to death. That is usually how these villages passively deal with witches. The villages that actively deal with witches tend to beat them to death or stone them or burn them. There is also the possibility of the workers taking the witches away which would mean that their bad luck with no elsewhere and they wouldn't be able to cleanse them. If the witches are removed from their community then they have nobody to blame their bad luck on and they believe that they will continue to suffer so long as the witches are still alive. If you take away the witches before they can kill them they have no way to fix their luck

I don’t see much of a case for trying to help people who seem to be actively evil through aid or charity

Because doing nothing only makes the situation worse. These children are innocent, vulnerable, and literally helpless. They are suffering. If they don’t die in childhood then they grow up and become adults who will most likely continue the cycle of abuse and suffering in one way or another. The effects of trauma are devastating on the minds and bodies of all humans, but especially children. I’m not saying that the way to fix this is easy, or that the problem will just magically disappear with the right circumstances… only that doing nothing will cause these problems to continue 100% of the time.
